About Lindsay Gravelle
Lindsay Gravelle is a potter based in the Kawartha Lakes. She has been making and teaching pottery for over 8 years and has worked as a studio facilitator and technician with organizations like Inspirations Studio in Toronto, Ontario, The Toronto School or Art, and Toronto Potters Studio. She studied Studio Art at The University of Western Ontario (2009), Ceramics at Sheridan College (2019), and has a Masters of Education in Adult Education and Community Development from The Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (2021).
Her ceramics combine elements of wheel throwing and hand building and often incorporate illustrative and decorative elements. Using her background in fine art, she uses sgraffito, underglaze and glaze painting, and texture to animate the surface to create truly unique objects that have a story to tell. Multi layering surface decoration, often referencing family and found photographs, and collected pop culture ephemera, each piece is intended to evoke a hazy memory, an affective connection, or a relation to the ceramic object beyond its use value. Exploring clay and glaze chemistry is a large part of her practice and this allows her to highlight certain features, obscure some of the imagery, and evoke the feeling of fading memories in contrast to the permanence of the ceramic object.
